‘Not Being Loyal to The Opportunity’: Virat Kohli Considers Tough Phases of Life as ‘God’s Test’

Written by Toshi Pawar

India cricketer Virat Kohli has witnessed his career rising to dizzying heights which put him in the category of all-time greats. Kohli has also witnessed a period of sustained struggle per his sky-high standards where things weren’t exactly going as he wanted them to.

At one stage, Kohli seemed destined to match the prolific record of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar but there came a phase when for over 1000 days, he couldn’t score a century in international cricket.

He worked on his technique, changed his game, took a break from cricket to recharge his batteries and the efforts gave him mixed results. The wait ended at the Asia Cup 2022 when he scored the only century of his T20I career.

Soon the runs started flowing and he became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in ODI history.

In a video that is going viral on social media, Kohli gave an insight into his work ethic and mindset during the lowest phase of his career.

“How you react to the times when you are not feeling great and how you ride that wave and accept things the way they are – it’s a very delicate thing to do when you know you’re not doing well and you feel like you don’t want to work, you don’t want to go to practice, you don’t want to work hard in the gym,” Kohli said in the video.

“But you feel like as an individual, you’re respecting all phases of life, and even in your worst times, you are committed to do the hard work, and it’s not based on success. That, to me, is the real game here, because that is eventually God’s test. This is how I look at it and if you’re not up to the test then you are basically not being grateful and not being loyal to the opportunity that’s been given to you,” he added.

Kohli has entered the final stretch of his international career having recently retired from T20Is after India’s world cup triumph in the Caribbean. Currently in London on a break, the former India captain will be back in action next month when India will host Bangladesh for a two-match Test series.
