Bairstow out as England name 5 uncapped players in ODI, T20I squad against Australia

England have named five uncapped players in their squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia, leaving out seasoned stars Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali. The series, which includes three T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals, marks a significant shift towards future talent. Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, both batting all-rounders, received their first international call-ups for the T20 series. Essex batter Jordan Cox, Hampshire seamer John Turner, and Leicestershire left-arm bowler Josh Hull also made the cut.

Hull, Bethell, and Turner were included in both the T20 and ODI squads. Bairstow and Moeen, who were crucial in England’s World Cup campaigns, were left out, signaling a possible end to their international careers. Bairstow, a 2019 World Cup winner, has represented England in 287 matches across all formats, while Moeen, with 298 caps, was a key figure in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup triumph. England will be coached by Marcus Trescothick on an interim basis after the departure of Matthew Mott earlier this year. The first T20 match against Australia is scheduled for September 11.

World Cup winners Jonny Bairstow (34) and Moeen Ali (37) have been left out of England’s squad, possibly marking the end of their international careers. Bairstow, with 287 appearances, was given a two-year contract last October but was dropped from the Test side earlier this summer. Moeen, with 298 caps, retired from red-ball cricket after last year’s Ashes. Chris Jordan was also dropped, while Joe Root was rested from the ODI squad. Saqib Mahmood returns after a long injury, and Brydon Carse was included as his betting ban ends in August.

Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith will feature only in the ODI matches, with Liam Livingstone selected for T20s only. Mousley impressed in The Hundred, and Jacob Bethell, part of the 2022 Under-19 World Cup squad, received his first call-up. Cox, picked for the Sri Lanka Test squad but released, hit a 92-ball century for Essex in the County Championship.
