Nicholas Pooran breaks Chris Gayle’s six hitting record

Written by Rohit Pawar

West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran continued his rich form in T20 cricket. Pooran, while batting in the Caribbean Premier League 2024, shattered the 9-year-old record of Chris Gayle for hitting most sixes in a calendar year. Pooran, who hit 9 sixes in his innings vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Saturday, August 31, already has 139 sixes in 2024.

Pooran crossed Gayle’s record of 135 sixes, which has stood since 2015. The legendary West Indies batter has multiple entries in the list. Out of the top 10 entries, 6 belong to Gayle – for hitting the most sixes in a single year.

This was the first time that Nicholas Pooran was able to break into the top 10 in the list. Pooran has played for 8 T20 teams this season including the West Indies national team and has hit 139 sixes in 58 matches. The batter has 13 fifties to his name but is yet to score a hundred this year. Pooran is head and shoulder above the rest in terms of scoring runs. He has 1844 runs to his name this year and is expected to cross the 2000-run barrier.

Pooran crossed Gayle’s record in the 12th over of the CPL match, when he went down on one knee and smashed Tabraiz Shamsi over the leg side for his 6th six of the night. Pooran brought up his fifty in 21 balls as well.
