After leaving England job, Matthew Mott becomes Sydney Sixers assistant coach

Matthew Mott, the former head coach of England’s Men’s and Australia’s Women’s cricket teams, has taken on a new role as assistant coach of the Sydney Sixers. Signing a three-year contract, Mott will join forces with head coach Greg Shipperd, replacing Cameron White, who took over as head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in June. Mott’s coaching resume is highly impressive. During his time with the Australian women’s team, he led them to triumph in multiple major tournaments, including the 2022 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cups in 2018 and 2020.

His success extended to the men’s game, as he guided England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup were lacklustre for the England team as they failed to defend both crowns. This would lead to Mott resigning from his post after the T20 World Cup campaign this year. Returning to familiar territory, Mott is back in Sydney, where his coaching career first gained momentum when he was appointed head coach of New South Wales Blues in 2007. His wealth of experience and past successes are expected to be a valuable asset to the Sydney Sixers in the years ahead.

Mott said he was delighted to join back up with the Sixers and Sydney evokes great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity.

“I’m delighted to join back up with the Sydney Sixers,” Mott said. “Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it’s a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I’m looking forward to. The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, really appealed to me.”

General Manager of the Sydney Sixers, Rachael Haynes, said that they didn’t need to think twice about bringing Mott to the backroom staff.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have ‘Motty’ committed for the next three years with the club. When the opportunity arises to bring a coach of Motty’s calibre into your ranks, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic resource he will be for our playing group,” said Haynes.
