England’s new white-ball head coach Brendon Mccullum has hailed captain Jos Buttler as the greatest ever white-ball player to play for the country. Notably, McCullum, who’s serving as England’s Test head coach since June 2022, recently took over the duties of the white-ball teams as well, is contract extended until the end of 2027.
Recently, McCullum spoke highly of England white-ball skipper, hailing him on his remarkable career. The former New Zealand cricketer also called him the greatest white-ball player to don the England jersey and said that he has nothing left to prove.
“I think Jos has had an unbelievable career. If he were to retire tomorrow, he goes down as arguably the greatest white-ball player England has ever had. He has nothing left to prove,” McCullum told Sky Sports.
Buttler has been one of the finest players in the limited overs format for the past few years as he played a pivotal role in Englan’s ODI World Cup 2019 triumph with a magnificent 59 in the final. He further took over the reins from Eoin Morgan and led the team to their second T20 World Cup victory in 2022.
However, England are now going through a transition period after they failed to defend their ODI and T20 World Cup crowns and are looking to bring in some fresh talent to begin another era of dominance in international cricket.
McCullum acknowledges England’s thirst for change
McCullum also acknowledged England’s ‘thirst for change’ and the need of bringing some fresh faces into the national side.
“I think there is a thirst for change. The one-day and T20 teams have been incredibly successful. It is in need of refreshing and bringing in some of that new talent which has probably been inspired by the very people that they are going to end up replacing,” he added.
McCullum will take over the England white-ball setup from January 2025 ahead of the India tour in the lead up to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
