Travis Head eager to ‘keep the chatter on’ around his promotion as Test opener

Star Australia cricketer Travis Head is eager to keep the chatter on around his promotion as the Test opener amid his stellar form across formats. Head registered his best-ever innings in ODIs as he scored a brilliant 154* (129) in the series opener against England and helped his team chase down 316 in just 44 overs.

Following his sensational hundred, Head was asked whether he would be interested in taking the opening slot in Tests as well, as the team has the massive shoes of David Warner left to be filled. The southpaw remained tight-lipped on the matter but encouraged the media to continue with the chatter.

“Keep the chatter: it makes it interesting. I’m not going to dive into that. I’ll just let that play out. I’ve worked extremely hard over a few years and I probably play the game a bit more relaxed now. I take it for what it is and try to enjoy what I’m doing. It’s coming off in the way I’m playing,” Head was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Head has been on an incredible run across formats from 2022 onwards. He etched his name in history books by scoring the first hundred in the World Test Championship final against India in 2023. His 163 helped Australia get crowned the Test champions. He also played a major role in Australia’s ODI World Cup 2023 triumph by scoring 137 (120) in the final.

The opener also finished as the third-highest run scorer of the T20 World Cup 2024 with 255 runs from seven innings. However, he hasn’t opened for Australia in Tests since March 2023 and has predominantly batted at number five throughout his career.
