Former Australian cricketer Stuart Law has been dismissed from his role as head coach of the USA men’s national cricket team. His exit comes after USA’s heavy 10-wicket loss to Scotland in a qualifying match for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The decision to part ways with Law follows a tough start in the World Cup League 2 series in Dallas, where the USA struggled, bowled out for 144 runs in their opener. Scotland’s Andrew Umeed then scored an unbeaten 98 to chase down the target within 24.5 overs at Grand Prairie Stadium. The defeat to Scotland compounded recent challenges for the team, which entered the match after a 3-0 T20 series defeat to Nepal.
“USA Cricket announced the departure of Men’s National Team Head Coach Stuart Law today.”
“Law was appointed to the position in April and led the team during USA’s historic performance at this year’s T20 World Cup, where the team advanced to the Super 8 in its inaugural World Cup appearance,” read the statement.
USA cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison said that it wasn’t an easy decision to make to end the tenure of Law but they felt that a change was necessary for the next phase.
“Given Stuart’s contribution to the program, this was not an easy decision to make,” said Atkeison. “Unfortunately, we felt that a change was necessary for the next phase of competitive preparation.”
Law, appointed to his post in April on a three-year contract, led the USA through a remarkable T20 World Cup campaign, co-hosted with the West Indies, where the team recorded a historic upset over Pakistan in Dallas and advanced to the Super 8s. While USA did crash out in the Super 8s, their performance caught the eye of everyone.
Known for his experience coaching international teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Afghanistan, Law’s stint with USA Cricket has now come to an unexpectedly early end. The USA will face Nepal next in the World Cup League 2 series on Sunday.
