Mehidy Hasan named captain for West Indies ODIs, no Shakib Al Hasan

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will lead Bangladesh in their ODI series against West Indies after Najmul Hossain Shanto failed to recover from a groin injury. Mehidy recently led the Tigers in the two-match Test series against the Caribbean team and is set to take charge of the Tigers in the 50-over format .

Left-handed batter Afif Hossain Dhrubo has earned a recall to the ODI team after a year. The 25-year-old last played international cricket on the tour of New Zealand last year. Zakir Hasan, who was a part of the ODI series against Afghanistan, has retained his place in the team.

Nahid Rana, who was impressive on his ODI debut against Afghanistan, kept his spot in the team. Towhid Hridoy, in the meantime, could not find a place in the squad due to an injury to his right groin. The BCB medical team will assess his injury after he returns from a two-week rest period.

“Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised to rest, and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play,” BCB Sports Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury said in a press release.

Shakib Al Hasan remains to be absent from the Bangladesh team after he last played for the Tigers on the tour of India. The all-rounder also couldn’t take part in his farewell Test in Mirpur against South Africa due to the political tensions in Bangladesh.

Faruque Ahmed, the BCB president, however, said that Shakib is still more than capable of playing for Bangladesh at the highest level. But he also mentioned that the Magura-born cricketer needs to sort out his issues over security concerns.

“As for Shakib Al Hasan, I cannot provide a definitive answer. I want him to play, but his absence is not related to the cricket board. The reasons preventing his participation involve law enforcement and the court. It’s not easy for me to address this,” Faruque said.

“If the issue is resolved, I still believe Shakib has the ability to play for the national team,” Faruque added.
