In a bid to transform it as the hub of day-night short format International games, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has approved the floodlights at Sinhlease Sports Club (SSC), Cricket Age exclusively learns.

The decision, which was recently taken by the top brass at Maitland Place, marks a new era for Sri Lanka’s most prestigious club, as the Intentions are to make it centre for day-night shorter format International matches, as well as domestic encounters.

At present, Sri Lanka plays its day-night games at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo or at Pallekele and Dambulla.

“Not only International games, with floodlights at SSC, we plans to play National Super League (NSL), LPL, T10 league matches also here” A top SLC official told Cricket Age.

In addition, Colombo’s big school matches also to be played at SSC, once the floodlights Installation is done. Some of Sri Lanka’s most popular Colombo based schools – Nalanda College, Ananda College, S. Thomas’ College, Royal College etc. – plays their matches at SSC.

Not surprisingly, even SSC administration, led by club president Ranjith Pandithage, has welcomed SLC decision wholeheartedly!

“There were some hurdles and reservation from a committee member to take money from the Cricket Board for floodlights, but at large SLC’s Initiative is taken positively by club’s office bearers. Majority of SSC stakeholders believes it was long due and it’s right time to move forward to the next level” a club Insider told Cricket Age.

Once the floodlights task is done, other Infrastructure works – mainly to enhance sitting capacity at ground – will also take place.
