The Indian Captain Rohit Sharma had reportedly decided to announce his retirement after the fourth Test against Australia at Melbourne, but eventually changed his mind, a decision that has seemingly frustrated the Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.
Rohit who missed the opening Test in Perth, made his return to the Indian side where he found himself batting in the middle-order to accommodate the in-form KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rohit’s inclusion also saw Shubman Gill being displaced from the playing 11 but Rohit failed to deliver in the series.
According to a report by Times of India, the Indian captain could have been the second player to retire after Ravichandran Ashwin but the words of some of his close confidantes resulted in the skipper changing his mind.
“Rohit had made up his mind after MCG. Had his well-wishers from the outside did not force him to change his mind, we could have seen another retirement in Australia,” said an unnamed source who was aware of the situation.
Rohit’s change of mind reportedly did not go well with the Head Coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian captain had not featured in the final Test that took place in Sydney. In fact, the two have reportedly had various disagreements over several issues which include the squad composition, toss and others.
Both Gambhir and Rohit are under pressure to deliver big-time, and the two want to get on the same page regarding the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 tournament, which could be the last dance for several senior starts within the international setup.
