Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane injured his right hand while fielding at extra covers during their victory over Delhi Capitals on Tuesday night. Rahane tried to stop a drive from DC opener Faf du Plessis off the bowling of Andre Russell, but the ball deflected off his finger as the South Africa completed a single.

Rahane immediately started shaking his hand and walked off the field in the company of KKR team physio. It was the first delivery of the 11th over which was deemed no-ball as Russell had overstepped.

Rahane didn’t return to the field and with KKR vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer being replaced as Impact Sub by Vaibhav Arora, allrounder Sunil Narine was handed the captaincy duties.

KKR went on to successfully defend 205 with DC managing 190/9 despite a half-century from Du Plessis.

When asked during the post-match presentation about his injury, Rahane said, “Not bad. I’ll be OK. I’ll be fine.”

Rahane will be assessed by KKR medical staff on Wednesday morning to determine the seriousness of the injury.

The win was KKR’s fourth of the season in 10 games and they remain seventh in the standings. Despite the win, Rahane said they were 15 runs short of what would have bee the ideal total.

“204 on that wicket was good, but I thought we were 15 runs short, frankly. We were going really well as a batting unit. But again, you’re chasing 204, you know as a fielding team, you are one or two wickets away, and that’s what happened,” Rahane said.
