Former First-Class Cricketer Jerry Woutersz and fast bowler Eric Upashantha are set to be included in the new selection committee, to be headed by Graeme Labrooy, Cricket Age reliably learns. Gamini Wickramsinghe will be retained in the committee, while Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) Has mysteriously discarded Sajith Fernando from the previous committee.
The tenure of previous committee ended on May 15.
“SLC has sent the names of Graeme Labrooy, Gamini Wickramsinghe, Jerry Woutersz and Eric Upashantha to form the new selection committee for the approval” A senior official of Sports Ministry told Cricket Age.
Chandika Hathurusingha, The high profile Coach of Sri Lanka team, name has also been forwarded as selector on tour.
Woutersz, played First Class cricket for Sri Lanka, has served SLC as the team manager in 2015.
Upashantha, a right handed batsman and right arm medium fast bowler, played 2 tests and 12 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He was part of the Sanath Jayasuriya led selection committee as well in 2016.
Gamini Wickramsinghe, meanwhile, has been notorious for biased selections. Gamini and Graeme Labrooy were responsible for benching Sri Lanka best under19 player Hasitha Boyagoda in the world cup to fit their favorite Santush Gunathilika.
SLC also surprisingly retained Graeme Labrooy as the chairman of selectors. During his last tenure, he Recalled Jeevan Mendis, Chaturanga De Silva, Sachith Pathirana and Lahiru Thirimane from nowhere and dropped young talents like Dhananjaya De Silva and Kusal Mendis. More importantly, he became worldwide famous for selecting squad on ‘Skype’. He has still been serving as the ICC regional match referee, is also the president of players association and is doing the insurance job as well.
However, SLC mysteriously discarded Sajith Fernando, the only selector, Who was going every part of the country to see the domestic matches. According to sources, some of his associates were against him, falsely referring his Night Club in Colombo and plotted against him.
