Virat Kohli has overtaken Steve Smith after his performances in the recently concluded Edgbaston Test against England, and has now become the seventh Indian overall (the first since Sachin Tendulkar in June 2011) to occupy the top spot in Test cricket.
Kohli leads Steve Smith by 5 points, after gaining 31 points through his performances at Edgbaston. Smith was the top ranked batsman in Test cricket for the last 32 months, before Kohli displaced him in the rankings which were announced by the ICC this morning.
Apart from Kohli, the other Indian batsmen who have previously officially been ranked No. 1 in Test cricket are Sachin Tendulkar, Rahu Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, and Dilip Vengsarkar. He is even ahead of Gavaskar on the all-time tally of points with 934, 14th overall in the list in just 67 Tests.
