Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has stepped down as a captain after unexpected and humiliating defeat against Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka lost the five match ODI series 3-2, and there was lot of pressure on him, from every corner.
Though, Mathews had been tipped to lead the team at least till 2019 world cup by Sri Lanka cricket board, but the indifferent results under his leadership meant there was no escape for him. In the history of Sri Lanka cricket, they had never been defeated in a ODI series against a lower ranked team. But, Zimbabwe crushed Sri Lanka in their home soil, and majority of Sri Lanka fans termed it as the ‘darkest day of Sri Lanka cricket’.
Mathews captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, of which the team won 13 and lost 15. In ODIs, he won 47 and lost 46 while in T20Is he won four and lost seven.
After the sudden departure of Mathews as a captain, Upul Tharanga is expected to lead the team against India later this month, when the neighbor will come for a full series, including three tests, five ODI and solitary t20.
Interestingly, Sri Lanka have already been without a full time head coach, after the departure of Graham Ford, after champions trophy.
