Aaron Finch, Australia’s white-ball skipper, rued the lack of partnerships with the bat after Pakistan completed a 3-0 sweep of the three-match Twenty20 International series with a 33-run victory in Dubai.
The visitors had a decent series with the ball, restricting Pakistan to totals below 160 in every game, but their batting unit could not come together. Australia capitulated in the chase in all three matches.
“I think we had a chance in all three games,” said Finch after the third t20i on Sunday, 28 October. “Throughout the series, we had a lack of partnerships. They are a very good fielding side. Every time you give them soft wickets, it is devastating.
“Our bowlers did well. Restricting them under 150-160 in all the matches was a really good effort. Batting against spin is something we have to work on. It’s going to be a tough series (against South Africa and India). We have to improve quickly.”
While his Test career got off to a flying start, Finch had an ordinary T20I series. Including the one-off T20I against the United Arab Emirates, Finch managed just five runs in four innings.
“Especially some new guys in the side playing in subcontinent conditions … they come at you with a lot of spin and it starts to play with your mind a little bit,” said Finch. “Once you start thinking negatively in T20s, every time you doubt yourself, you question your tactics or you question your ability. That’s when you can come undone.”
