South African speedster Dale Steyn created history on the 1st day of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan as he became the highest wicket-taker for South Africa in the longest format of the game. The 35-year-old needed one scalp to go past the legend Shaun Pollock, who had scalped 421 wickets in Tests. As he broke the record, AB de Villiers and Pollock himself hailed Steyn for the remarkable achievement.
Steyn, with 422* wickets in 162* innings, is now 11th on the list of most wickets in the history of Test cricket. For South Africa, he comes at the top followed by Pollock (421), Makhaya Ntini (390), Allan Donald (330) and Morne Morkel (309).
Steyn dismissed Fakhar Zaman in the seventh over of the game as his 422nd scalp. Pakistan were put right under the pressure as the visitors lost two early wickets before the completion of seven overs.
Dale Steyn has played 89* Tests so far in which he has scalped 422 wickets. The right-arm pacer made his Test debut against England in 2004. In 2016, he looked set to lead the pace attack against Australia in away series but he suffered a broken shoulder right on the second day of the 1st Test, thus being ruled out of the series.
