Virat Kohli gives fitting reply to Gautam Gambhir’s ‘captaincy’ jibe

Few days ago former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL winner Gautam Gambhir criticised Virat Kohli and his trophyless captaincy tenure for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The words have gone viral since his big statement on an analysis show at Star Sports ahead of the kick off to IPL 2019. And when Kohli was asked about it ahead of the opener between RCB and MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, he giggled before saying that he is unfazed if his legacy is hurt over trophyless IPL run.

Kohli has been with RCB since its inception and had taken over the captaincy rein in 2013. Under him, RCB had finished third in 2015 and had reached the final the very next year before finishing eighth and sixth in the subsequent seasons.

Gambhir reckoned that Kohli has been lucky that RCB still has trusted him with captaincy responsibility despite poor records compared to few other captains who have had a shorter stint following a poor captaincy record. Gambhir mentioned that Kohli still has a long way to go as a captain and cannot be compared to the likes of Rohit Sharma or even MS Dhoni who have each won three IPL titles apiece.

“If I think like people from outside, I can’t even sustain five games. I would be sitting at home. I know people talk about it a lot and they like to grab opportunities to talk about these things. But I have a responsibility here and given a chance, as a captain, I would love to win the IPL for my team. We all are motivated to do so” he said.
