Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly took charge as the 39th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday. Ganguly’s appointment as the BCCI chief was formalised at the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Addressing his first press conference as BCCI President in Mumbai, Ganguly was asked about the future of veteran wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni, who has not played for India since 2019 World Cup.
Dhoni had made his debut for the Indian team under Ganguly, who had a huge role to play in shaping the wicket-keeper batsman’s career. As Ganguly starts a different innings in an administrative role – as country’s elite cricketing body’s top boss, he backed Dhoni when asked if he is rooting for a legendary comeback from the 38-year-old.
Ganguly stated that India is proud to have a cricketer like Dhoni while highlighting his achievements. He stressed that champions don’t finish quickly and assured that he will be soon meeting with Dhoni to sort out his future. “No, I haven’t had a word with him yet. We will meet soon and have a word with one of the greats of Indian cricket,” Ganguly said at the presser.
“It depends on him, I have always said even when I was left out the world said that he will never make it. I believed in myself and came back and played for four years. Champions don’t finish very quickly. I don’t know what’s in his mind. in his career so we will deal with it,” said Ganguly.
