In the span of last three-four months, India batsman Mayank Agarwal has proven himself as an all-format player as he first showed his flamboyance as a Test opener and then played the T20 format at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and later switched back to red-ball cricket while playing for Karnataka at the Ranji Trophy. The 28-year old now is also set to make his ODI debut in the upcoming West Indies series.
Talking about his transition between red ball-cricket and white ball, Mayank Agarwal said he tries to keep his basics simple regardless of the format of the game he is playing in.
“The more I play like this, the better it is for me as a cricketer because I rather play cricket than not play cricket. When it comes to mindset (switching formats), the basics remain the same. It’s easy to switch formats if your game-plan is clear and your understanding of the game is clear,” Agarwal told teammate Yuzvendra Chahal on Chahal TV.
“Regardless of wherever I play, I always think about how I can become an asset to my team and how I can contribute to the team. Even if I don’t score runs with the bat, I think about contributing on the field, bringing in more energy on the field.”
Opener Mayank Agarwal has replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan in the ODI squad for India for the 3-match West Indies series starting December 15.
While playing for India in the Tests, Agarwal has scored 2 double hundreds and a hundred in his last 6 innings. He has scores of 215, 108, 10, 243 and 14 in the Tests against South Africa and Bangladesh. Agarwal also featured in India’s maiden Pink ball Test.
“I want to win each and every match, each and every tournament. When you come in with that attitude, your mindset will be good. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get the results 100 percent but you will be giving yourselves a good chance to perform,” Mayank Agarwal said.
