Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as Team India’s Test captain ahead of Sri Lanka series

Leader of the Team India side in the limited-overs format, veteran opener Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain of the Test side prior to the red-ball series against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Rohit has officially succeeded outgoing captain Virat Kohli as the leader of the Team India Test side. The premier batter had earlier replaced Kohli as Team India’s full-time captain in the limited-overs format before the South Africa tour.

Rohit, who had earlier replaced Kohli as India’s T20I captain, missed the entire One Day International (ODI) and Test series against hosts South Africa due to a hamstring injury. Rohit recorded his first appearance as India’s full-time captain in the 50-over format during the West Indies’ tour of India. The 34-year-old was appointed as Kohli’s deputy in Test cricket at the time.

Meanwhile, veteran batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped from the Test side for the series against Sri Lanka, but chairman of All-India Senior Selection Committee, Chetan Sharma made it clear that the “doors are still open” for the duo.
