Bangladesh appointed all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as Test captain for a third time on Thursday after Mominul Haque quit following a poor run of form. Bangladesh Cricket Board also named batsman Liton Das the new vice-captain ahead of a two-Test series in the West Indies later this month.
“They will be in the positions until a further decision is made,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan told a press conference. Mominul stepped down as Test captain on Tuesday. The 30-year-old left-hander has scored 162 runs in six Test matches in 2022, averaging 16.20.
In the recent series against Sri Lanka, which Bangladesh lost 1-0, he made 11 runs in three innings.
This is 35-year-old Shakib’s 3rd stint as Bangladesh’s Test captain. The leading all-rounder first took over the top job in 2009 and continued in the post till 2011 when he was sacked from the job after a series loss to Zimbabwe. Shakib returned to lead Bangladesh in Tests in 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim and remained in the role until he was suspended by the International Cricket Council for failing to report corrupt approaches.
Shakib will begin his 3rd stint as captain when Bangladesh tour West Indies for a 2-Test series later this month. BCB president Hassan said Shakib has given his full commitment to play all three formats of the game.
“We have a series against Zimbabwe after the West Indies. He may not be there. Other than this, he gave us a commitment he would play in all formats in future series, but it’s difficult to say for how long Shakib will be leading the side,” Hassan said.
