Warner, Smith should not be made Australia captains: Mitchell Johnson

Former fast bowler Mitchell Johnson reckoned that Pat Cummins may not be able to handle the workload of captaining Australia in all three formats. Last year, Cummins took over from Tim Paine as the Aussie Test skipper after the latter found himself tangled in controversy.

Recently, Aaron Finch announced his retirement from ODIs and Australia are in need to find his successor in the 50-over format. Johnson said that Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green are options for the Australian captaincy.

“Pat Cummins (Test skipper) may not able to do all formats. It might be too much workload for him, but then I look and check who is available,” Johnson was quoted as saying to PTI.

“The selectors have someone in mind may be Glenn Maxwell. Cameron Green would also be a good choice if you are looking the future but there is already a heavy workload for him as an all-rounder. Travis Head is there but he needs to be more consistent,” he stated.

However, Johnson was of the opinion that Australia would be better off not handing captaincy responsibilities to Steve Smith or David Warner. Johnson said that Smith and Warner are into the second half of their careers and may not be great long-term options.

“Both Warner and Smith should not be captains. No issue with them being advisors of the team which they already are. I don’t see why this needs to be brought up all over again, it brings back the old stuff (the scandal)….
