A series win in India is bigger than winning the Ashes series, former Australian captain Steve Smith has said ahead of the first Test match, set to be played in Nagpur on February 9. Smith, one of the best Test batters of his generation will be crucial for Australia who have won just one Test match against India since their 2004/05 campaign. The middle-order batter said that it is very difficult to win a single Test match in India, and if they do, it will be bigger than the Ashes victory.
“It’s a difficult place to win… a Test match let alone a Test series. So you know if we’re able to topple that mountain that would be huge. I think if we can win India that would be bigger than an Ashes series,” Steve Smith said in a video uploaded by cricket.com.au.
In the promo video, Australia captain Pat Cummins agreed to Smith’s views and said that victories in India are rarer than away wins at the Ashes.
Australia will be hoping to exact revenge on the Indian side that defeated them in back to back Test series Down Under. The squad has several injury concerns and will hope that their top players fire in all cylinders in the four-match Test series.
