Australian opener David Warner has said he is really looking forward to the World Test Championship final against India at the Oval and is expecting an exciting clash between both teams from 7-11 June.
India and Australia will be locking horns for the Test Championship mace in England, after having met earlier in the year in India. It was the hosts who had won the series 2-1 after demolishing the Aussies in the first two Tests.
Warner had a horrendous run of form during the series and would return home owing to an injury. The Australian opener scored 26 runs in three innings for the Aussies.
The 36-year-old’s form in the longest format of the game hasn’t been great in recent times as he has scored one fifty in his last 15 Test innings.
The Australian management has retained their faith in the 36-year-old, with head coach Andrew McDonald tipping Warner to play a big role in the World Test Championship final and the Ashes 2023 series, which follows after the match at the Oval.
Speaking to Isa Guha for BBC Sport, Warner opened up on the importance of the upcoming clash against India and said it wouldn’t be just a mere warm-up for the Ashes series. The 36-year-old said that the match will matter a lot for the Aussies, who he feels has played some good cricket over the past 18 to 24 months.
Warner said that he is looking forward to the clash between India and Australia and expects the affair to be an exciting contest.
“It would mean a lot, as a team we’ve played some good cricket over the last 18 to 24 months,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to it: Dukes ball, both teams firing, playing against each other here in England. It’s going to be exciting.”
Warner had commented recently that he would retire from Tests after the New Year’s Test against Pakistan in January 2024 at the Sydney cricket ground.
