Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell hasn’t given up on his dream of playing Test cricket for his country again, saying he backs himself as being a viable option in the subcontinent. Maxwell isn’t part of Australia’s squad which is set to take on Pakistan in a three-match Test series at home.
Speaking to SEN, Maxwell said there are not a lot of spots up for grabs in this Australian Test side, stressing the fact that they’re World Test champions. Australia will be taking on Pakistan in the first match of the series at the Optus Stadium in Perth on December 14.
“I’m quite understanding of the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There are not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home,” said Maxwell.
He went on to say that he could be a real viable option when it comes to playing Test matches in the sub-continent, adding that he’ll keep plugging away and hoping for an opportunity. Maxwell has played seven Test matches for Australia, scoring 339 runs at an average of 26.08 and a top-score of 104.
“But I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side. I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage,” Maxwell added.
Interestingly, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting backed Maxwell to make a comeback to Test cricket for the Baggy Greens, lauding his all-round game. Maxwell last played a Test for Australia in 2017.
“I could see him (Maxwell) getting back into a Test line-up because of the all-round game that he brings in those conditions,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.
