Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Shivam Dube has the opportunity to have an impressive IPL 2024 season, which might assure him a place in India’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. Chopra’s opinion stems from Dube’s recent explosive form in both T20I cricket, followed by a similar form in domestic cricket for Mumbai. With the highly anticipated new season of IPL just around the corner, Shivam Dube is one of the many names already under the spotlight of both Indian cricket fans and national team selectors.
“In my opinion, it’s a huge opportunity for Shivam Dube as his name could come for the World Cup. He first scored runs for India in T20Is and then scored runs in the Ranji Trophy, and picked up wickets as well. So he has a big opportunity here,” Chopra said.
Dube’s brilliance during the Afghanistan series in January 2024, saw him win the Man of the Series award. His impressive form with the bat saw him score 124 runs across the three-match series, which included a remarkable 60 off 40 balls in Mohali, followed by an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls innings in Indore. With the ball, Dube took two crucial wickets across the three matches, showcasing he is capable of rolling his arm over, when needed.
Just a few days after India clinched the series 3-0, Dube extended his formidable form in domestic cricket. Following his heroics against Afghanistan, he continued his strong performance by scoring 366 runs across his last five Ranji matches, which also included two centuries against UP and Assam, respectively. With the ball, he bagged six wickets in the same number of matches.
Dube’s purple patch was cut short after the 30-year-old was ruled out of the remainder of the Ranji season due to a side strain injury. However, Dube will be looking to regain his fiery momentum with his IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings, who begin their IPL 2024 campaign on March 22, against long-rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore.
