Sri Lanka cricket has announced the appointment of Aaqib Javed as their fast bowling coach until the end of the T20 World Cup 2024 on March 16.
Javed, who has previously worked with Pakistan and the UAE national teams, will assume his new role with immediate effect.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed as the national team’s ‘fast bowling coach.’”
“He will work with the national team until the completion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA during June 2024,” read the statement from Sri Lanka cricket.
Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka cricket, said that Javed’s international experience as a player and coach will help their pacer get into good shape ahead of the World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA.
“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” added Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO, Sri Lanka Cricket.
As a player, Javed attained immense success and was part of the 1992 World Cup-winning Pakistan team. Since his retirement, the former pacer would go on to coach the likes of Pakistan and UAE.
He had served as the bowling coach when Pakistan had won the T20 World Cup in 2009.
During his time as coach, UAE went on to achieve both ODI and T20I status and played in the 2015 ODI World Cup. Javed was currently serving as the Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach of the Lahore Qalanadars team in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Sri Lanka are currently facing Bangladesh in a three-match series and had won the second game by 3 wickets.
