South Africa T20I captain Aiden Markram feels that his team is just away from winning one World Cup trophy to begin a streak of wins in major tournaments. Notably, in their 34-year-long history in limited overs format, South Africa are yet to win a World Cup trophy. The Proteas have time and again come close to clinching their elusive first-ever title.
However, they have agonisingly fallen short of lifting a World title despite their rich cricketing history. With the T20 World Cup 2024 beginning in a day, Proteas captain Aiden Markram expressed confidence in his men to finally end their World Cup drought, mentioning the quality of cricket, they’ve been playing for the last few years. The 29-year-old also said that if they’re able to win, they can potentially build up on their success and add more trophies to their cabinet.
“I definitely think we have what it takes and it’s a World Cup it’s a really high level of cricket. I think this group has now been together for quite a few years. We’ve shown through many performances in the past few years that we’re able to beat the best in the world. So, I’m quietly confident that this team has what it takes to win the World Cup. I think once we’re able to get that first elusive one I think potentially quite a few could follow after that,” said Markram in a press conference.
Notably, South Africa have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup just twice out of the eight editions in 2009 and 2014 respectively. They got knocked out of the previous edition of the tournament in 2022 after facing an embarrassing loss against the Netherlands.
Hence, the Rainbow Nation will be desperate to put up an improved performance in the upcoming edition of the event. South Africa are placed in Group D in the tournament alongside Nepal, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka against whom they start their campaign on June 3 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.
