Bangladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed reckons star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been supportive of the younger players in the national cricket team. Mushtaq highlighted Shakib’s influential role in mentoring the next generation of cricketers, particularly as the team gears up for their two-Test series against Pakistan.
Shakib, who recently rejoined the national team following clearance from Bangladesh’s interim government, has been a central figure both on and off the field. His return comes in the wake of significant political changes in Bangladesh, including the dissolution of Parliament and the exit of the Sheikh Hasina government, under which Shakib served as a Member of Parliament (MP). Despite these developments, Shakib’s commitment to the national team has remained unwavering.
At 37, Shakib’s leadership and experience have been pivotal, even though he has faced challenges, including a public rift with fellow senior player Tamim Iqbal. The disagreement, which surfaced last year, centered around Shakib’s criticism of Tamim for prioritizing personal interests over the team’s needs. This tension ultimately led to Tamim being excluded from the 2023 World Cup squad due to fitness concerns. Nevertheless, Mushtaq Ahmed emphasized that Shakib, along with other senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Taskin Ahmed, has been playing a constructive role within the team.
“Shakib, Mushfiq, and Taskin have all been incredibly supportive of the younger players, especially those who are touring Pakistan for the first time,” Mushtaq stated during a press conference in Lahore on Thursday. He praised the senior trio for their positive influence, which has been instrumental in fostering a conducive environment for learning and growth within the squad.
Mushtaq also lauded the current Bangladesh side as a “coachable” team, noting their eagerness to improve and their willingness to absorb new tactics and strategies. “The players are enthusiastic about learning, and I hope to make a positive impact on them,” he added.
He further warned against underestimating Bangladesh, asserting that the team boasts a mix of quality players and emerging pace bowlers. “They are on the right path,” Mushtaq remarked. “What they need now is self-belief, especially when playing overseas.”
