Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka led from the front to guide his team to a commanding 5-wicket win over West Indies in their first ODI clash at Pallekele on October 20. A key 137-run partnership between Asalanka and debutant Nishan Madushka anchored the chase as Sri Lanka comfortably overhauled a DLS-adjusted target of 232 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Rain disrupted West Indies’ batting effort, cutting short their innings at 185 in 38.3 overs, just as Sherfane Rutherford was shifting gears with an aggressive counterattack. Rutherford’s promising innings was halted by the weather, leaving West Indies short of a full 50-over total. Nevertheless, West Indies found some momentum early on with their bowlers. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie emerged as the pick of the lot, managing to cope with the wet conditions and securing figures of 3/47.
Despite the challenging target and tricky conditions, Sri Lanka started their chase strong, with opener Nishan Madushka impressing on debut. Madushka’s confident knock of 69 from 54 balls helped lay the foundation for the innings. While Sri Lanka suffered some stumbles in the middle order, losing a few wickets, it was Asalanka’s captaincy and composed batting that steadied the ship. He led with a brilliant 77 off 71 balls, displaying excellent shot selection and control.
Asalanka’s knock was pivotal in ensuring Sri Lanka remained on course, despite West Indies’ brief resurgence. Kamindu Mendis provided the finishing touches, scoring an unbeaten 30 off 21 balls, while Janith Liyanage chipped in with a run-a-ball 18, helping Sri Lanka cross the finish line comfortably.
With this victory, Sri Lanka showcased their ability to handle pressure and adverse weather conditions, taking the early advantage in the series.
