Sunil Gavaskar took to social media to call out an online media outlet for falsely publishing a column under his name. The website called Cricket Ception published a story on Friday titled, “A New Era in Leadership: Bumrah’s Captaincy and Kohli’s Leadership Revive Team India”.
On his official Instagram handle, Gavaskar published a video where he said, “Hi, this is Sunil Gavaskar, and I want to say that there is a website, Cricket Ception, which has printed an article under my name. I have to say that it is completely fake. I have not contributed to that at all, and I want to tell that website to take it down immediately. Issue an apology. If you don’t do that, I will give the matter to my legal team. So, don’t believe a word of what you’ve read. This is a completely fake article attributed to me”.
The former India opener threatened legal action if the story was not taken down. He also urged fans to remain cautious about misinformation that runs rampant online. “Never believe everything you see on the Internet #alwaysverify” in the caption of his Instagram post.
The story came up after the first day’s play of the opening Test between India and Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. The first Test, which took place at the Optus Stadium saw the visitors being bundled out for just 150 runs. Jasprit Bumrah who is leading the Indian team in Rohit Sharma’s absence, led from the front with a five-wicket haul to help run through the Aussie batting unit for just 104 runs.
