Former England captain Eoin Morgan said that Delhi Capitals (DC) did not lose their nerves in the ‘heat of the moment’ during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction. Morgan, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the finals of the 2021 edition, said that the Capitals smartly brought KL Rahul instead of getting back Rishabh Pant.
DC had the chance to use their RTM card and get Pant back, but instead they chose not to. It was Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who bought the left-handed Pant, who became the most expensive player in IPL history with a price of INR 27 crore.
Rather, the Capitals roped in Rahul for INR 14 crore after the wicketkeeper-batter moved from the Super Giants.
“I’m not quite sure about RCB, the elephant in the room. It’s great business by DC, you know, they’ve capitalised on what a moment can mean in the heat of the moment, and they’ve stood up. They’ve recognised great value, and they’ve come to the table,” Morgan told the broadcasters.
Morgan, however, said that Rahul should have fetched around 20 to 22 crore given the value he brings to the fire. He also said that the Capitals should make Rahul the skipper for the next edition of the tournament.
“You know, they had their right to match card out for Rishabh Pant, realised that 27 crores was too much, but almost backed into a corner and go toe to toe with RCB for KL Rahul, who is not a 14 crore player,” Morgan said.
“I totally agree with Robbie. He should have gone for 20, 21 and 22 for what he brings to the table. He’s without doubt going to be captain as well. I have no doubt about that, and it leaves them a great pot of money to invest. You would say in that bowling line to support Mitchell Starc,” Morgan added.
