Ahead of Chennai Super Kings ‘ (CSK) opening match of the Indian Premier League ( IPL ) 2025 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23, there has been one major topic of discussion and it’s whether MS Dhoni will retire after the end of the ongoing season or not. Many cricket pundits have put their views on it, and now former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar joined the debate asking people not to judge the 43-year-old’s abilities.
MS Dhoni has been playing in the extravagant T20 tournament since the start in 2008. He has been a part of the Chennai-based franchise from the beginning. Just in 2016 and 2017, Dhoni played for the Rising Pune Supergiant. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter played 264 IPL matches, amassing 5243 runs at a strike rate of 137.54.
In the 17th season of the IPL, Dhoni played with a knee injury but still appeared in 14 matches and scored 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.55.
While speaking exclusively on JioHotstar, Gavaskar questioned why people are putting pressure on the former Indian skipper. He asked the cricket world not to ‘doubt’ Dhoni’s ability based on his age as it’s just a number for him.
“Why should we even ask that question? Why put pressure on him? Every time people question MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong. Don’t doubt his ability. Even at this age, he’s hitting sixes not just past the boundary but into the stands during practice. Age is just a number when it comes to Dhoni,” Gavaskar told JioHotstar.
